Our Charities

Currently, we are supporters of two local charities: Jersey Hospice Care and Community Savings. Our director, Steven, has for many years given his time to assist various local charities. He is a former chairman of Crimestoppers Jersey, having held the position for ten years, and has been a director of Community Savings since 2010 and a trustee of Jersey Hospice Care since 2014, as chairman of fundraising.

Jersey Hospice Care

Jersey Hospice Care is a registered Jersey charity and makes no charge to patients. It provides specialist palliative care for everyone who requires it, irrespective of cause. As a result, over half of the patients they now care for do not have cancer. Services include:

  • In Patient Unit
The In Patient Unit offers facilities for short stay admission, typically for assessment, symptom management, respite and end of life care. Care is delivered by skilled and experienced nurses, working with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, to ensure a holistic approach to the care of patients and their families.
  • Specialist Palliative Care Team
The Specialist Palliative Care team works across hospice, in the community and in the hospital, providing support, care, advice and complex symptom management.
  • Community Bereavement Service
The Community Bereavement Service provides free, confidential and person-centred support to any islander who has experienced a bereavement.
  • Emotional Support Service
The Emotional Support Service provides free, confidential and person-centred support and is there to help explore and manage feelings around the impact of knowing that someone is going to die.
  • Children and Young People
However long or short a child’s life may be, Jersey Hospice Care is there to support every member of the family, every step of the way – from initial diagnosis until they no longer need us. It is estimated that there are currently 60 children and young people who have a life limiting condition.

Currently JHC provides nursing care in the General Hospital and at their homes, but we have a vision to provide dedicated children’s bedrooms and facilities to afford them the same dignity and support as we provide to adults at Clarkson House, Mont Cochon.

However we would like to raise the capital cost through fundraising and work in partnership with Health Service for its ongoing costs, who already pay for the paediatric nurses. To enable us to take this aim further, we would welcome pledges only at this stage.

The annual cost to run our charitable services in 2018 was in excess of £6.7 million (£18,600 per day). Funding for our care services is almost entirely dependent on the generosity of islanders.

If you would like to consider making a donation to Jersey Hospice Care to support any of the above services, or pledge some money towards the possible Children’s facility, please contact Steven Hunt, T +44(0)7700 777700 and I will effect an introduction.

Community Savings

Community Savings is a registered Jersey charity that provides access to basic financial services for Islanders who would otherwise be excluded from having a bank account. This includes providing a debit card and bank facility so that they can undertake the normal transactions that we all take for granted.

Importantly, the skilled volunteers offer debt advice and financial mentoring, as well as emergency funding by way of low-cost loans and grants.

People who use the service include those who have become redundant, bereaved, divorced or separated, ill, or whose circumstances have suddenly changed causing them great stress and they need someone independent who can help them work through a difficult time.

The charity also works with schools and colleges to deliver a financial education programme to local students aged 11 to 18.

Community Savings has recently been supported by Santander International as part of their community support programme but otherwise is almost entirely funded by donations.

If you feel that you would like to financially support our efforts to provide support to people who are struggling to cope with their financial situation or who are in need of emergency support, please contact steven.hunt@communitysavings.org.je for a confidential chat and introduction to the charity.
