AGA – the heart of the home for life

We all know that the heart of the home is the kitchen. Big or small a kitchen is where love is cooked up, mugs of tea are brewed, Christmas lunch is prepared, late night munchies are satisfied and where everyone gravitates. During these darker autumnal months, cosiness and comfort are top of our list and nothing says comfort quiet like an AGA in your kitchen.

“Beloved by the middle classes and owners of farmhouses, the AGA is a totemic symbol of country living. There is usually a wet dog lying in front of it, a pile of laundry steaming gently on it, and preferably the aroma of baking rising from within.” – Kate Watson-Smyth

We always get a little bit excited when as property has an AGA, as it instantly makes a house a home.

“So how did the AGA come about? Well, it was, as is often the case with the best inventions, an accident. Gustaf Dalén was a Swedish Nobel Prize winner, who was blinded when a bulb he was testing for an automatic flashing lighthouse exploded. On returning home he was apparently appalled to discover how much time his wife and the maid spent tending the oven and resolved to invent a cooker that could be left on all the time and didn’t need constant attention.” – Kate Watson-Smyth

Mary Berry, probably Britain’s most famous AGA owner said, ‘It’s the heart of the kitchen… I love the warmth and the wonderful welcome. If I had to live without one, I’d loathe it.’
